Department of General Practice and Emergency Medicine

Department of General Practice and Emergency Medicine (GP/EM)
The Department of General Practice and Emergency Medicine (GP/EM) is a cornerstone of any hospital or academic health institution, carrying the significant responsibility of providing comprehensive, patient-centered treatment, care, and support, while simultaneously advancing medical education and research.

At RAHS, the GP/EM Department functions as a multidisciplinary hub, integrating emergency care, primary and comprehensive outpatient care, academic training, and research innovation.

Mission
The mission of the RAHS GP/EM Department is to deliver outstanding emergency and outpatient care to all patients through excellence in clinical service, education, research, and innovation. We are committed to providing accessible, high-quality, and holistic care for conditions ranging from non-urgent illnesses to life-threatening emergencies.
1. Clinical Services
Emergency Care:
The 30+ bedded Emergency Department operates 24/7, delivering urgent and life-saving interventions for critically ill and trauma patients. It is equipped with 17 cardiac monitors, a central oxygen supply and suction ports, and a fully equipped minor-to-moderate operating theatre with two beds. Bedside eFAST and echocardiography are available for rapid critical care assessment, along with a dedicated triage center at the Emergency Department entry point.
Triage System:
Beds are categorized into Red, Yellow, and Green Zones for triage-based patient allocation. The Emergency Department manages more than 80–100 emergency cases within 24 hours.

2. Outpatient Day Care in G-OPD:
We provide primary and comprehensive first-contact care six days a week, offering consultations, prescriptions, patient counselling, and referrals to specialist or super-specialty services. The OPD handles over 9,000 patient visits annually.

Facilities & Staffing:
The department is staffed with 2 Professors, 4 junior faculty members, medical officers, nurses, paramedics, and trained support staff. A duty room is located within the department to ensure round-the-clock availability of medical personnel.
3. Academic and Training Activities
Undergraduate Teaching:
Training MBBS, BN, and BSc Nursing students in the principles of primary and emergency care.
Postgraduate Program:
The MD (GP/EM) program, launched last year with two residents, develops competencies not only in medical expertise but also in communication, coordination, leadership, professionalism, collaboration, and health advocacy.

Planned Telemedicine Services:
We aim to integrate telemedicine and online consultations in the near future to extend healthcare access to remote communities, in partnership with local clinics.

The Academy of General Practice and Primary Care, operating under RAHS, regularly provides professional clinical and research training to GP/EM members. Specialized training programs include:

Basic Life Support (BLS)
